Even though sports scoreboards have been around as long as games have been played in front of a crowd, larger stadiums pose an interesting problem for scoreboard manufacturers. The challenges with scaling a scoreboard to larger and larger sizes are many, and only a few companies can take on a challenge like this. Electro-Mech is one company that offers some of the largest scoreboards available and have been doing so since their founding in 1963. They make a wide variety of scoreboard sizes and styles to accommodate any schools needs.
One of the first challenges with a large scoreboard is making the digits that show the score and other details large enough for the fans to read. In days past these digits were represented by a collection of incandescent bulbs that would light in a pattern to form a number. This worked well indoors and in smaller outdoor stadiums, but the larger the scoreboard got, and the further away it was from the fans, the harder it was to read. Electro-Mech solved this problem by using newer LED technology in their largest scoreboards. These LED’s are brighter than the older incandescent bulbs and can be seen from farther away. They also last longer and use less electricity than older bulb systems, which makes them less expensive to own and operate. This LED technology also allows Electro-Mech to make the digits larger and in their largest scoreboards they include digits that are 24 inches high. Between their size and the crispness of the LED’s, these numbers can be clearly seen from quite a distance away. These LED’s also offer a more distortion-free view of the scoreboard if you are seated at an angle.
Another challenge that Electro-Mech had to overcome with their largest scoreboards was connecting the controls used to update the scores. In older scoreboards this was accomplished by running a special cable between the scoreboard and the control booth at a stadium. While this worked well, it added a lot of cost to the installation since this cable had to be buried and a trench dug to accommodate that. Electro-Mech introduced a wireless system for their scoreboards a few years ago that eliminates the need for this cable. Their largest scoreboards can now be controlled easily without the need for a cable between the controller and scoreboard, and affords the school a lot more flexibility in moving this controller around as needed.
Another key innovation with the largest scoreboards offered by Electro-Mech is their mounting flexibility. With improvements to their manufacturing materials, and design innovations like LED technology, these newer scoreboards are lighter and can be mounted in more ways than older models. This means a school has many more options for the placement of these new scoreboards and can install them in the best possible location for fans to see them, and not have to worry about their weight. Considering all of the improvements that Electro-Mech offers in their largest scoreboards, they have a clear leadership position for most schools needs. They can help create a scoreboard that is perfect for your school, no matter how large your stadium.
Electro-Mech offers electronic football scoreboards, baseball scoreboards, basketball scoreboards, hockey scoreboards and soccer scoreboards.
