There are some fans that seem to begrudge the newer technology, high quality scoreboards; indicating that they feel they are taking over the game. You probably know some of these people, they do not buy-into new tech very quickly (if at all) and seem to always be longing for ‘the good ol’ days’. If they are homesick for times gone by and were an avid fan of any sports team or concert event, they were also probably one of those people that were lucky enough to have seats in the first twenty rows. As one of those that often sat in the ‘nose bleed’ areas, I can tell you that the good ol’ days, were not that good. Thanks to the electronic scoreboards, all of us can now not only see a game or concert, but feel like we are actually participating in the moment.
In the past, attending any sports event with really bad seats did offer a shared experience with the rest of those that were not lucky enough to have the best seats in the house. We would gaze upon the field, viewing the tiny ant-like players when a hit or goal was made and sometimes, not really sure what actually happened. We relied upon our fellow fans and the old scoreboard to let us know if our team was winning or losing. When attending a concert, you had to hope that the stadium sound was good enough, because you could barely see any of the performers. Yes, there was movement on the stage and possibly a special effect or two – but, to be honest, it was pretty bad.
With the advent of the new electronic scoreboards, we fans can now see and hear with crystal clarity. We can view our team in gorgeous color as they score a point. We can see a panoramic video or streaming news feed with up-to-the-minute excitement. When we re attending a concert, the scoreboard turns into a video screen that rivals anything we might have at home and the sound quality places you in the front row.
The evolution of electronic scoreboards has taken place rather rapidly, but it has been based on the desire of the fan to experience more. When everyone in the house can share in the game, know what is happening, cheer for their team and rock out at a concert, the stadium ticket sales increase exponentially and the sponsors see this as a viable profit making arena.
So, the answer to those that think the scoreboards are taking over the game is a resounding: No. These scoreboards are enhancing the experience, giving us an opportunity to be at one with the game or concert. We can access the information on our smartphone apps and share with a friend that couldn’t attend. Information is uploaded to the net and people all over the world can feel like they are with us.
Electronic scoreboards have opened up a portal for everyone to participate and enjoy. The scoreboards haven’t taken over the game; they have made it so we all have the great seats.
