Recent Additions to Baseball Hall of Fame Players

Each year the Baseball Hall of Fame list grows by a few deserving players, umpires and office executives. The 2008 Baseball Hall of Fame added just one player to Cooperstown, despite a deep pool of nominees. The Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) votes each year to choose which players make it to the hallowed hall.

The Story of Bob Sheppard and How He’s Been the Announcer Since 1951

For Yankee Stadium announcer Bob Sheppard 2008 may have been his last time up in the press box. After 57 years announcing for the New York Yankees, Sheppard supposedly told the New York Times on April 1 that he is retiring at the age of 98, ending an era that was almost uninterrupted in Yankee lore.

Baseball History of The Chipola College Marianna, Florida

In the the seat of Jackson County, Florida, the small town of Marianna with 6,200 residents eagerly await the coming of each spring. The “City of Southern Charm” is not waiting for the tourists to come and see their historic main street–no, they come all year round. No, they are excited because the baseball season will be here. The biggest game in town happens just off the I-90 at Chipola College, the junior college that serves this area. There at the Chipola Stadium, the crack of the bat will announce a new season and the fans will cheer the scoreboard as their Indians play at the highest levels.

Biography of Larry Bird

Biography of Larry BirdFor Larry Bird basketball was the way out of a life of poverty. Growing up in rural Indiana, there was no early indication that the Larry Bird Hall of Fame would be a reality. In fact, even tough he was drafted by well-known Indiana University out of high school, it was too much for Larry-he dropped out and spent the next year working for the French Lick road and trash services.

Baseball Spirit in Trinity Christian of Dublin, Georgia

Named for the its more famous namesake in Ireland, the Dublin in Georgia is a small hamlet in between the large cities of Savannah and Atlanta. This town of 17,000 is known primarily for two things that get its citizenship charged up: the month-long St. Patrick’s Day festivities and high school sports. One of the four high schools serving the area is Trinity Christian, a small private school four miles out of downtown with some consistently competitive athletic teams. In 2009, they have a football prospect likely to go pro and their teams in each sport have numerous championships. Their baseball team is the most recent winner of a championship to the delight of their vocal fans.

Baseball Team of Screven County High School Screven, Georgia

In Sylvania, Georgia, the small town pace is a way of life. Far enough away from the big cities like Savannah to be out in the country but still close enough to have been nicknamed “Station City” in the 19th century. As the only high school in the area, Screven County High School, provides the sports action for this small hamlet. Baseball is especially popular in this hamlet, drawing fans to the field each week during the spring. Fans love to come cheer on the Gamecocks and watch the ball occasionally clear the left field fence near the scoreboard.

Highest Scoring NBA Game Ever

Highest Scoring NBA Game EverIn NBA basketball high score is a way of life. Team routinely top 100 points per side during a 48 minute game and can combine for a point total somewhere in the mid 200s. In the most high scoring basketball game in history, though, the two teams took three extra periods to combine for 370 points. In the highest scoring NBA game ever completed in regulation time, the two opponents combined for a lofty 320 points.

Tampa Bay Rays Phenomenon

The Tampa Bay Rays uniforms and name changed before the 2008 season so that they could sever ties to their losing past. It seems to have worked. The Tampa Bay Rays shrugged off a decade of losing along with their blue and white jerseys and made it all the way to the World Series. Now, the Rays are the envy of the league–a full blown phenomenon that has yet again redefined the model of success in baseball.
