The 2008 WNBA Draft picks were highlighted by the number one selection, Candace Parker. Parker was one of the best draft picks in the history of the WNBA, playing a rookie season that netted her Rookie of the Year and the Most Valuable Player award while on the Los Angeles Sparks. The 2009 WNBA draft picks may not have as much promise as Parker but it was still a loaded draft that will improve the teams that selected them.
At Electro-Mech we not only produce electronic basketball scoreboards but also provide you with the latest basketball news- WNBA included. Here is a list of the WNBA draft picks that went at the top of the list:
Angel McCoughtry. Atlanta Dream. McCoughtry is a 6’1” forward who played all four seasons at Louisville. She averaged 20 points per game to go with 10 rebounds. An All-American who is ready to play. She took her Louisville team to the NCAA Finals where they lost to UCONN. She was an easy choice as the number one WNBA draft pick.
Marissa Coleman. Washington Mystics. The 6’1” combo guard/forward played all four years of college basketball for the University of Maryland Terrapins. She received All ACC honors three years in a row, a Terrapin record and averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists at college. One of the WNBA draft picks with the most potential.
Kristi Toliver. Chicago Sky. The 5’7” guard was Coleman’s teammate for the University of Maryland. She averaged 18.4 points per game with a high field shooting percentage of 44%. She is known as a quick guard who pushes opponents on defense to open up her teammates for shots. Toliver will undoubtedly turn out to be on one of the best draft picks in this draft.
Renee Montgomery. Minnesota Lynx. The other 5’7” guard who was chosen behind Toliver by the thinnest of margins. She took her UCONN Huskies team to win the NCAA Finals in 2009. She averaged 13 points and 5 assists per game and plays a drive-at-the basket style that should help the Lynx get on the scoreboard more frequently.
DeWanna Bonner. Phoenix Mercury. A 6’4” guard out of Auburn University, Bonner is a tall guard for WNBA and even NBA standards. She averaged 15 points with a remarkable 45% shooting percentage from the field during her four years there. She may turn out to be one of the best draft picks for the Mercury with her ability to shoot over any of the guards that covers her.
Briann January. Indiana Fever. The 5’8” guard from Arizona State University is known as a defensive specialist. She was voted as the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. She can also score, giving the Sun Devils 10 points per game to go along with almost 3 rebounds each contest.
Courtney Paris. Sacramento Monarchs. The top center in the draft, Paris is a 6’4” center from Oklahoma who made plenty of noise in the NCAA tournament. She is an All American who average 20 points and 18 rebounds per game in her four years at college. She was a steal at this position and a player who can have an immediate impact for the Monarch in a league that lacks centers.
