In a basketball scoreboards feature, we compare Kobe to the greatest players ever seen in the NBA, and ask, in historical terms, how does he match up against the best of the rest?
Kobe Bryant isn’t the best player in the history of the NBA: there have been a number of players who achieved more than him. His fans may not agree with this but unfortunately Bryant has lost a little of the magic he had in him. Now in his 30’s, he has lost some of his explosiveness, and perhaps doesn’t strike quite as much fear into his opponents as he used to. Saying that, he is still a living legend, and still the best player in the league today. Here is the list of the best ever. Where is Kobe?
1. Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan was a legend of legends. He had to be on the top of this list or else it would have lost its credibility! Jordan and Bryant are no comparison at all. We haven’t seen these two players playing together in their prime but, if we had I am sure who would have excelled – of course Jordan! Bryant was quite young when Jordan was at his prime and Jordan was relatively old when he played Bryant in his prime. It would certainly have been a great matchup but unfortunately we did not witness it. Kobe used to studied Jordan a lot and learned a lot from him, but he will never be able to quite match Jordan’s level.
2. Magic Johnson
Some of Kobe’s fans think that that he is the best Laker ever, but I think that there were players who were better than him. Earvin magic Johnson is one of those players. The basketball scoreboards showed that Johnson led the Los Angeles Lakers to five titles in the greatest era of NBA history, the 1980s. The way he played for the team in those days will never be forgotten, as it weas groundbreaking stuff, basketball that had never been seen before. Kobe, no matter how could a player, has not had such an effect on the game.
3. Kareem Abdul Jabbar
How can one even think that Kobe is the greatest Laker of all times when you have had players like Kareem Abdul Jabbar on its roster? Kareem Abdul Jabbar still has a record of six MVP awards and is the leading scorer in the history of the NBA with 38,387 points. There is a chance that Kobe can break Kareem’s record of six MVP awards but he has never quite reached the level that Kareem did. Abdul Jabbar is the one of the greatest players of all times in NBA and is now regarded as a legend of the game.
These are three players were for sure bigger players than Kobe Bryant, but there are more, such as Larry Bird, Bill Russel, Wilt Chamberlain, and Oscar Robertson. Looking back at the history of the NBA, Kobe is one of the greatest, but he probably only just squeezes into the top ten in terms of the greatest of all time, but no higher.
