In a basketball scoreboards feature, we take a look at the top 3 Atlantic Basketball teams.
Basketball is very commonly watched in the US. In just the way cricket is loved and worshipped in Asia, basketball is THE game in the US. People are crazy about it and they just love this sport. The players love their supporters and try their best not to disappoint them. Lets take a look at the top 3 Atlantic teams:
Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics are the most successful team in the Atlantic division. It would not be wrong to suppose that the Boston Celtics are as good as Los Angeles Lakers. The basketball scoreboards show that the Boston Celtics have won 16 NBA championships. They have a historic rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers and have faced each other in 12 NBA finals, the most recent being in the 2010 NBA final where the Celtics lost to the Lakers. It was the third time in which the Lakers have defeated the Celtics in an NBA final. Many of the Celtics players have received the Most Valuable player award. The Celtics have always been a great team, but declined somewhat after 1993 when the famous Larry Bird decided to retire. In 1998 the team began to recover, and from 1999 it started to rebuild and now is again one of the toughest teams to beat.
New York Knicks
The New York Knicks are ranked second in the Atlantic division. It is the second team which is still based in its home town, the first one is Boston Celtics. Knicks is the short form of Knickerbocker. Knickerbocker traces its origin to the Dutch settlers who came and settled in the New World. However, it specifically refers to the style of pants that are worn rolled up just below the knee. When the New Work Knicks were formed, the team did not have a name. The staff members decided to put a name in the hat each, and when they were pulled out, many of them had recommended Knickerbocker, which was then shortened to Knicks. Recently, the New York Knicks have not been able to win a NBA title, but are trying hard to get their hand on the grand prize.
New Jersey Nets
The New Jersey Nets are ranked third in the Atlantic division. The 2009-2010 season was not a good season for the New Jersey Nets. After 16 straight losses, the management fired the head coach Lawrence Frank. The assistant coach Tom Barisse stepped in as a temporary replacement but failed to bring the team back on track. The New Jersey Nets then hired Kiki Vandeweghe as the new head coach. Upto now his coaching is reaping good results for the team and they are well on the road to recovery. The New York Knicks are the biggest rivals of the Nets. The Celtics are also said to be their rivals, but as the Celtics are the number one team in the East and the Nets are rebuilding, their rivalry is not as intense as with the Knicks.
