This top 6 list of NBA teams was chosen by a panel of media experts just over 10 years ago. Voters were asked to call in and select their top list too. The final list, the best teams in NBA history, are given below:
1964-65 Boston Celtics
The henchmen of this team were Bill Russell, John Havlicek and Sam Jones. The team broke its own record for the most victories in one season. Naturally, they went on to become the victors of the NBA championship that year, and for the seventh consecutive time.
They won the Eastern championship against the Philadelphia 76ers in game seven, with the basketball scoreboards showing 110-109. John Havlicek’s move at the end of the game led to the now infamous “Havlicek stole the ball!” call. They then defeated Lakers 4-1 in the Finals.
1966-67 Philadelphia 76ers
Lead by Wilt Chamberlain, Chet Walker and Hal Greer, they won 46 of the first 50 games, and in the same season broke the all time record for the most victories in one season. They also broke the Celtics’ 8 championship run. They were victorious against the San Francisco Warriors in the 1967 Finals.
1969-70 New York Knicks
Willis Reed, Dick Barnett and Walt Frazier combined in what was one of the best passing teams the NBA has ever seen. They beat LA 4-3 in what was one of the best ever NBA Finals.
1971-72 L.A. Lakers
Wilt Chamberlain, Gail Goodrich, and Jerry West brought LA their very first NBA championship of the Lakers era. In doing so, they broke the 76ers record for wins in one season. During that season, they won an incredible 33 consecutive games, and that record has not been beaten to this day. They also had the best away winning percentage in the history of the NBA. They beat New York in the finals, with the basketball scoreboards showing 4-1.
1985-86 Boston Celtics
After losing 4-2 to the L.A. Lakers in 1985, Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale combined to lead the Celtics to the best record in team history. They were 40-1 at home, which is the best winning percentage in the history of the league. They beat Houston 4-2 in the NBA Finals.
1988-89 Detroit Pistons
Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, and Bill Laimbeer combined in what was perhaps the strongest defensive team ever seen. The team lacked a dominant center, and so they had a three guard rotation system that defended incredibly. They beat the Lakers 4-0 in the NBA Finals.
1995-96 Chicago Bulls
Led by Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen, the Bulls won an incredible 87 out of 100 games, including the playoffs. This team’s performance in the 95-96 season is probably the best performance in one season from any team ever.
