Basketball has become such a popular sport that celebrities and athletes from a wide range of professions and sports now partake in charity and promotional basketball games. The best celebrity basketball game of 2008 had to be the McDonald’s NBA All-Star Celebrity Game held in New Orleans during the NBA All-Star weekend. There are other celebrity basketball games conducted for charity across the nation but the most popular celebrity game remains the McDonald’s All-Star Celebrity Game.
The NBA celebrity basketball game featured some of the biggest stars in professional sports and entertainment. The celebrities were divided into two teams: New Orleans and the Hornets. The New Orleans team featured stars such as Master P, Taylor Hicks, Terrell Owens and Seth Gilliam. The Hornets team featured stars such as Chris Tucker, Common, and Deion Sanders. The New Orleans team was coached by actress Gabrielle Union and the Hornets team was coached by actress Alyssa Milano.
Despite the fact that these celebrities were not professional basketball players, the game was surprisingly well played and competitive. The New Orleans team defeated the Hornets by a score of 51 – 50. In fact several of the Hornets players including Chris Tucker and Common had chances for the game winning shot. Terrell Owens brought home the MVP award by scoring a game-high 18 points, two of which came on a dunk, a rarity in celebrity basketball games. Other top players included Master P, who scored 17 points, and Deion Sanders, who had 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Another great celebrity basketball game was founded by Curtis Granderson of the Detroit Tigers and is held at the Lake Orion High School just north of Detroit. Granderson started the tournament to help benefit his Grand Kids Foundations. Some of the celebrities that took part in the tournament included Tyrone Wheatley, former Michigan football star and NFL player, Desmond Howard, another Michigan football alumnus and former NFL All-Pro and former Detroit Lions Herman Moore and Lomas Brown.
Every year there are celebrity basketball games that benefit a variety of foundations and causes. While these games are providing a great social service they can also be extremely entertaining as well. As more and more people play the sport of basketball the number of participants in these games will increase as well. What’s surprising to most fans is the skill level of some of the celebrities who play in these games. Now fans have an entertaining way to spend some money on a worthy cause and catch a good basketball game in the process as well. A win-win situation for everybody.
