More importantly, he was an essential element in what was a team performance, and his team and linking play was exceptional in every game.
Some people are starting to think, after this series of amazing performances, that Kevin Durant is not only the best player in the USA team, but in fact the best player in the whole of the NBA. Other people do not understand this, as the USA team was effectively the ‘B’ team, with all the big starts such as LeBron and Kobe left out.
The basketball scoreboards showed that Durant led the league last season in terms of scoring, and his Thunder team strongly challenged the Lakers in the playoffs. Nevertheless, the debate of who is the NBA’s most valuable player lies between LeBron and Bryant. Byrant is the best closer the league has seen for a long time, and has won more NBA championships. LeBron is without doubt one of the most gifted players ever and this season he will be going all out for a trophy. Durant is only 22 years old, and a big part of what is a young Thunder team, but he still has some way to go before he reaches the heights of the two greats in the NBA.
The World Championships and the NBA are very different. Neither Kobe nor LeBron would have necessarily brought the Gold medal back to the US. They do great things in the NBA, but it is a very different prospect when you are playing against the rest of the world. Kobe and LeBron are superstars with a superstar mentality. Durant, on the other hand, is a fantastic team player, and it takes team players to win on the international arena. The World basketball scene is less about individual stars, and much more about the sum of the parts.
Durant is still a few years away from reaching his prime, and it is staggering to think what he will be able to achieve in the future. In NBA terms, he will not be considered one of the greatest until he wins a championship, and until he has shined like a superstar on a regular basis in the league. However, after his performances in Turkey, he really can be considered the best in the world
