A team that learns how to execute fast break basketball will have an advantage over their opponents each and every time. Running the fast break allows for easy baskets in transition while also increasing the tempo of the game. But executing this style of offense requires timing and teamwork so practicing specific drill will get the results everyone desires.
One drill in particular is commonly referred to as the “three on two, two on one drill” and is particularly effective in teaching the fundamentals of the fast break. Two players line up as the defenders on one side of the court, usually at the opposite foul line. The rest of the team breaks off into three lines at the other end of the court. One line directly under the basket and the two other lines about halfway between the key and each sideline. The center line starts off as the ball handler running up court with the outer two lines filling the lanes. The ball handler than passes to one of the wings and they can either take the layup or pass across to the other wing depending on the actions of the two defenders. Ideally, the first defender should force the ball handler to pass at about the top of the key. The second defender would then go to the wing that received the pass. After the ball handler makes the pass, he must hustle back to the other end of the court to play defense. The two defenders now take the ball and dribble back the other way for a two on one break. This drill is great for teaching both the offensive and defensive skills required for fast break basketball.
Another great drill that develops the skills required to run the fast break in basketball does not use any defenders and focuses on offense only. The team is broken up into three equal lines, one under the basket and two at each foul line extended. The coach would then throw up a shot to generate a rebound and depending on how the rebound came off the rim would determine the fast break. For example if the rebound came off to the left, then the player would under the basket would grab the rebound and fire an outlet pass to the player at the left foul line extended; while the player at the other foul line extended would race to center court to receive the pass. This drill is great for teaching players the proper spacing for running a fast break. It also focuses on one of the most important aspects of the fast break; the outlet pass.
The fast break in basketball is a great way for the offense to generate easy points against a tough defensive opponent. By running the fast break, a team can wear down an inferiorly conditioned opponent while also disrupting their defensive flow. Combining a good balance of fast break offense with a good half-court set offense will lead to impressive results on offense.
Today’s game is so fast it’s hard to keep up with sometimes. These guys are quick, and they look like they have bungee cords tied to them the way the whip up and down the court. I know passing is a big part of the fast break, and sometimes that’s gotta be like throwing a leading pass to a wide receiver. One of the greatest ever at passing those long ones was the late, great Pete Maravich.
