Personally, as of fan of the New York Knicks and college basketball in general, I’ve seen my share of heart-stoppers. In particular, the mid 1990’s produced some of the most memorable moments that will stick with me as a fan forever.
The New York Knicks had some pretty good teams during the ‘90’s as they conisistently won the Atlantic Division and advanced deep into the playoffs. The 1992 – 1993 season, in particular was a successful one that saw the Knicks get all the way to the conference finals against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. After taking a 2-0 lead the series eventually went to a game 7. After a back and forth battle, the Knicks had a chance to win it on a last second shot. The rebound came to Charles Smith who had position under the basket for the easy put back. Instead, his lay-up was blocked whereupon he got his own rebound and was blocked again. All told Charles Smith had 3 chances under the basket to tie the game but was unable to do so. Many Knicks fans still haven’t forgiven Charles Smith for those misses.
One of the best basketball games I’ve ever seen was the 1992 Regional Final matchup between the University of Kentucky and Duke University. Both teams were tournament favorites coming into the matchup and boasted two dominant players in Jamal Mashburn and Christian Laettner. The game was close from the starting tip-off with neither team taking control in the first half. The see-saw battle continued through the second half until there was about 5 minutes left in the game. From that point forward, the teams traded baskets until Kentucky took possession with about 10 seconds left. Kentucky drove the length of the court and hit a running layup to go up 103-102 with 2.1 seconds left. After calling timeout, Duke was left with the daunting proposition of going the length of the court and getting off a quality shot, all in 2.1 seconds. What transpired next is one of the greatest moments in college basketball history. Brian Davis threw the inbound pass the length of the court where Christian Laettner caught it at the foul line. He took one dribble and turned to the right and hit a fade-away jump shot as time expired for a 104 -103 win.
No matter what the age of a particular fan, they all have their favorite games that they could review as if it happened yesterday. The joy of watching basketball lies in the anticipation of knowing that this could be a game where some last minute magic can happen. You could be potentially watching one of the best basketball games ever each time you sit down to watch a game.
