Baseball Fun Facts
• It was in 1846, when professional baseball was in its infancy, that the first recorded argument between a player and umpire transpired.
• It wasn’t until the 1931 season that the ground-rule double came into effect. Prior to that season any ball that bounced over the outfield fence in fair territory was considered a home run. It should be noted that Babe Ruth never had one of these homeruns likely because he never had any trouble belting them over the fence.
• Throughout the history of Major League Baseball there have been 14 hitters to record four homeruns in one game.
• Cal Ripken Jr. was nicknamed the “Iron Man” for playing in 2,632 consecutive baseball games over 16 years.
• Nolan Ryan pitched for 27 years in the majors compiling 5,714 strikeouts in the process.
Fun Baseball Games to Play
Perhaps you think you hate baseball because you don’t like to watch it on television. There are a couple of games that we played while I was growing up in the 1960’s and 1970’s that were pure baseball game fun!
Runners
This is a good way to improve your reflexes, your base stealing ability, and your throwing accuracy. It involves three players and two bases spaced 60 or 90 feet apart depending on your skill level. Please, please refrain from using your little brother or sister as the bases. Two players take up position at the bases and one player is the runner. The two fielders start the game by throwing back in forth as in playing catch. The runner tries to steal the base. If he is successful, he continues. If he is tagged out, he switches positions with the player who tagged him.
Scrubs
When a bunch of kids from the neighborhood got together to play baseball and there weren’t enough players for two teams, we would play scrubs. To begin, choose a method to select four players, such as drawing straws, to be batters. The rest of the players take up positions in the field. The first batter will try to get a hit and get on base. If he is made out by any method, he exchanges positions with the fielder and the fielder becomes the fourth batter.
For example, if the pitcher strikes him out, the batter moves to the pitcher position and the pitcher becomes a hitter. If he flies out to left field, they switch positions and so forth. Players get the opportunity to play a variety of different positions and is ideal for younger players learning the game.
