1. Ray Chapman
Ray Chapman is the only baseball player who has ever been killed during a scheduled major league game. During the game Chapman was struck by a ball that was pitched, and was rushed to the hospital in grave condition. Chapman died at the hospital the next day, a fatality of the game.
2. Roberto Clemente
Roberto Clemente played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and was a huge success in major league baseball. He had amassed four titles for his batting abilities, and had three thousand hits at the time of his death. Clemente died when the plane he was on went down and crashed. He was taking supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua, and although wreckage from the crash was found his body was never recovered.
3. Luke Easter
Luke Easter was a player for the Cleveland Indians from the late nineteen forties until the middles of the fifties. In 1979, after cashing some checks for his company, Easter was robbed at gunpoint by two armed men for the five thousand dollars he was carrying. One man had a pistol and the other had a sawed off shotgun. Both men fired, killing Easter instantly.
4. Tim Crews and Steve Olin
Cleveland Indians baseball players Tim Crews and Steve Olin were boating together in Florida in 1993, during their spring training camp. A boating accident occurred and both men were killed instantly. The Indians were doubly devastated at the death of two teammates in the same accident.
5. Arky Vaughan
Arky Vaughn was a major league baseball player, who had played for years with both the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Vaughan was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his baseball talent, and the entire sport was greatly saddened when Vaughan drowned.
6. Minnie Rojas
Minnie Rojas was a major league relief pitcher, and a good one. That all changed in 1968, when a car accident happened. Rojas and all three of his children were in the car, and two of the three children died. The third child had significant injuries, and Rojas suffered from permanent paralysis as well. His career was ended and he lost two of his children in the accident.
7. Donnie Moore
Donnie Moore had a bright future in baseball, but all that ended in tragedy. Moore attempted to murder his wife. Moore first shot her and then shot himself in what was meant to be a tragic murder suicide. Moore’s wife survived, although she was seriously injured, but Moore did not.
8. Lyman Bostock
Lyman Bostock is included in the list of top 10 baseball tragedies. While driving through Gary, Indian, Bostock stopped at a traffic light. While sitting at the light, shots were fired from another car nearby, and Bostock was killed instantly. He was remembered and mourned by the entire baseball community, as much for the loss of talent as for the senseless tragedy.
9. The Angel Team Bus Accident
On the way from Yankee Stadium in New York to a game in Baltimore, the team bus for the Angels was in a terrible accident which caused the team bus to hurtle off of the turnpike in New Jersey. A number of players and club members were hurt, some badly. Club manager Buck Rodgers was one of those hurt the worst and required medical attention.
10. The John Candelaria Tragedy
Major league pitcher John Candelaria suffered a terrible tragedy in 1985. His two year old son was in a swimming pool accident at home, and slipped into a coma. After being comatose for months, the boy finally died. Many fans and players were affected by the death of the child.
