In a baseball scoreboards feature, we look at the four greatest basbeall players ever to play the game.
George Herman Ruth (Babe Ruth)
Babe Ruth was born on 6th February 1985 and is known as one of the most famous baseball players to have ever lived. He was nicknamed “The Bambino” and “The Sultan of Swat.” The baseball scoreboards showed that he hit a record of 714 home runs in just 22 seasons and played as a right fielder. Many of his records lasted for decades. From 1914-1935 he was a major American baseball league player and played with the Red Sox for 6 years during which he pitched no less than 29 scoreless innings in a World Series – an outstanding record that lasted for 43 years. In 1920, Ruth was traded to the New York Yankees for what was then a huge fee of $125,000.
Tyrus Raymond (Ty Cobb)
Tyrus Raymond was born on 18th December 1886 and was nicknamed as “The Georgian Peach”. When Cobb debuted in center field for the Detroit Tigers, he was only 18 years of age, the youngest player in the history of baseball. He batted with an average of .240 in 41 games which was enough to win an attractive contract of $1500 from the Tigers in 1906. He has the highest batting average ever of .346, and 54 career steals of home, which is the highest ever seen in the game of baseball. Unfortunately, Cobb’s performance was always overshadowed by his aggressive and arrogant behavior as a result of which his team mates disliked him.
Henry Louis hank Aaron
Aaron was born on 5th February 1934 and is widely known as one of the greatest baseball players ever. He was the one who broke the record of the great Babe Ruth of 714 home runs in 1974. Aaron set a number of records in his 23 year career and has received the award for the most valuable player on multiple occasions. Aaron played for the Braves when they purchased him from the Clowns for $10000. Due to his outstanding performances, Braves promoted him to their class-A affiliate in the South Atlantic League, Jacksonville Tars. Aaron’s great work helped the Tars win the championship the year Aaron joined them. Being a black American, Aaron faced a lot of problems due to racism. For instance, he was segregated from his team mates whenever they travelled.
Eddie Clarence Murray
Eddie was born on 24th February 1956, and was one of the most productive and reliable hitters ever, which is why he was given the nickname “Steady Eddie.” Murray played for several famous clubs such as the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles. He had a batting average of .287 and the total number of hits in his career was 3255 and is ranked second as the switch hitters. He was inducted into the hall of fame in 2003
