In a baseball scoreboards feature, we look at what the MLB players think of their peers, and who they rate as the most overrated!
Sports Illustrated conducted a survey of one hundred and eighty seven (187) major league players to find the answer to the question that every MLB fan had been pondering over: which player is the most overrated? The answers each player gave were analyzed, and after much deliberation the top 5 were announced. However, once you see the list you will see how the players were not necessarily assessing the candidates according to their level of skill. Instead it seemed they were (being girls!) assessing them on the principle of: from a scale of 1 – 10 how much do I loath this player? Hey, no body said the world was fair and the MLB is right at the bottom! So, without further adieu, here are 3 of the 5 players who have been voted off the MLB island:
Joba Chamberlain – in this case it is evident that the 187 major league players were (not being girls!) assessing him on his skill, or should I say lack thereof, instead of assessing him on the loath-o-meter. After Joba practically gave up the lead of the Mariners in that ill-fated match 4 months ago (July, 2010) the fans were also screaming why hadn’t Joba been given up as well? Joba has been consistently inconsistent throughout his career (even though the baseball scoreboards show that he has an ERA of 2.25 in 8 appearances), which is why the 187 players consider him overrated.
Alex Rodriguez – you can already imagine which scale the 187 assessed him on (yes, here they became girls!) Alex Rodriguez is an extremely talented player, but the problem is that he knows it. To say ARod has an ego would be an understatement; he is the most controversial player in the MLB, with steroid abuse charges and a massive contract to go along with it. It is easy to see why the 187 loath him even though he has hit 500-something home runs and won 3 MVP’s. Putting his stats aside, yes Alex Rodriguez is overrated, because he himself made him so.
Gary Mathews, Jr. – if you look at his current stats the 187 players made the right decision here. When Gary Mathews was signed up on his big contract, it was evident why he was offered the big bucks; he had a hitting average of .313. However, that has changed now and he is averaging a meagre hitting average of .190, which is certainly not worthy of the $11 million he made this year. He will not be an overrated player of the MLB for long though, because it is probably safe to say that he will not be signed up for another contract when this one ends.
