- The complete baseball record book would take eons for an individual to work their way through. It seems that every imaginable statistic gets recorded, tabulated, and recorded into the records of baseball
- There is a popular saying that “records are made to be broken” and in most cases this is true in baseball. Most recently, the baseball record “most career homeruns” was broken by Barry Bonds after 33 years
- There are other records of baseball that have stood the test of time and may never be broken
Unbreakable Records of Baseball
It was once thought that Babe Ruth’s baseball record “most career homeruns” would never be broken until Hank Aaron came along and did just that. It took another 33 years for that record to be broken again when Barry Bonds reached 762 dingers. With steroid allegations dogging Bonds, there may have to be an asterisk placed next to his name in the baseball record book. There are a number accomplishments in the complete baseball record book that may never be broken, that is, until the next amazing superstar appears.
Pete Rose – 4,256 career hits
Sure, he had some gambling issues; however, no one can take away from Rose’s hitting prowess. His hunched-over hitting stance was designed to “shrink” the strike zone for opposing pitchers and allow him to “punch” the ball into play. He may not ever be inducted into the Hall of Fame but this entry into the baseball record book may stand the test of time.
Ty Cobb – .367 career batting average
Rose overtook Cobb on career hits but no one has seriously challenged him on his .367 career batting average. Cobb had 90 entries into the complete baseball record book and a few are still at the top. The fact that he achieved this record during the “dead ball era” is even more amazing.
Nolan Ryan – 5,714 career strikeouts
Nolan Ryan was in a class of his own. He pitched for 27 years until he was 46 years old and never lost much speed off his 100 mph fastball. Randy Johnson is 2nd all-time in strikeouts and at 45 years old is still 871 strikeouts behind.
Rickey Henderson – 130 stolen bases in a season
With baseball moving towards power and the “long ball”, Henderson’s stolen base record seems safe. In the past five seasons, the most stolen bases in a season have only reached as high as 62…less than half of Henderson’s baseball record.
Cy Young – 511 pitching wins
Nolan Ryan pitched for 27 seasons and finished his career with 324 wins. This, in itself, says a lot about this remarkable achievement. Young made his entry into the baseball record book during the “dead ball era” and that may solidify his position for all time. In fact, the top 5 winning pitchers of all-time come from this era in baseball. In contrast, Greg Maddux won the most games during the 1990’s and still managed only 355 wins for eighth place all-time. A remarkable achievement, for sure, but no where near Young’s feat.
