Mlb 2011 Spring Training: A Review Of The Teams With The Most Roster Changes

The 2011 season is about to begin and we have witnessed how many teams have been touching up their rosters during the spring training. Some teams are rearranging their rosters because spring training is the best opportunity for them to showcase their new talent. Some are doing so because a few of their players were big disappointments last season. While others are making changes to simply rid themselves of problem players and make room for new blood. In a feature, I have taken a look at the teams that have made the most changes to their rosters during spring training.

1. Boston Red Sox – after they missed the 2010 playoffs, the Red Sox have left no stone unturned to establish themselves as a team to be reckoned with. At the end of 2010, they signed-on Carl Crawford, who has been showing off how dangerous he can be this spring. Other than Crawford, the Red Sox have enlisted the slugging baseman Adrian Gonzales. While these two are their foremost acquisitions, they have also brought in Jarrod Saltalamacchia as catcher and Bobby Jenks and Dan Wheeler as pitchers.

2. Baltimore Orioles – The Orioles have made a number of changes to their ranks in preparation for the 2011 season. Their first is the powerful Vladimir Guerrero, the designated hitter and right fielder. Their second is first baseman Derek Lee, who is sure to light up the baseball scoreboards. Their third is Mark Reynolds. Although, he strikes out more often than not, he still is a dangerous player. Last but not the least: J.J Hardy the shortstop and starter Justin Duchscherer complete their acquisitions.

3. Tampa Bay Rays – of all the teams, Tampa Bay is perhaps the one which made the most changes to their roster. They lost 5 players: Dan Wheeler, Matt Garza, Grant Balfour, Carlos Pena and Rafael Soriano. On the other hand they acquired 3 new players: Left fielder Johnny Damon, outfielder Manny Ramirez and Pitcher Kyle Farnsworth. With these changes, the Tampa Bay Rays might just have enough oomph to be at the top of A.L East this season.

4. Milwaukee Brewers – the Milwaukee Brewers seem to have come up with a solution to their most persistent problem (i.e. their starting pitcher): Shaun Marcum! The Brewers snatched Marcum from the Toronto Blue Jays right after his career high performance in strikeouts and walks in 2010. Besides Shaun Marcum, the Brewers also acquired Zack Greinke from the Royals. However, unfortunately Zack Greinke cracked his rib while playing and will have to sit out the first month of the season in order to recover.
